Having several missing teeth might seem like the end of the world. But it’s not.
You don’t have to worry about smiling or struggling to eat your favorite meals anymore.
Why?
There’s a modern treatment called All-on-Six that takes care of that.
The treatment involves placing titanium posts into your jawbone. This creates a stable base for a dental bridge or other prosthesis.
This guide tells you all you need to know about them, what they are, who uses them, and how they work.
What is an All-on-Six Dental Implant?
An all-on-Six dental implant is used to reconstruct a person’s mouth. It is recommended for people who have lost most or all of their teeth in one jaw.
Instead of replacing each missing tooth one at a time, the dentist puts six small titanium implants in the jawbone.
These implants function as artificial roots for your teeth. This means they can support an entire row of teeth naturally. Usually, you get temporary new teeth after getting the implants. Once everything heals, though, the dentist attaches a set of permanent teeth to the implants.
Your jawbone is preserved. When teeth are missing, the jawbone can deteriorate over time. All-on-six implants counter this. They maintain active bone, and your face retains its natural shape.
Dr. Madina Gulverdiyeva, Prosthodontic Specialist at DentSpa, explains, “Most people hear ‘titanium posts’ and think it sounds scary. But really, once they heal, you’ll forget they’re even there.”
Why Dentists Prefer the All-on-Six Implant
Let’s talk about why this method is so popular among dentists and patients alike.
- More Stability: By using 6 titanium implants, the all-on-six procedure offers more stability. You can apply chewing pressure comfortably because it is equally distributed among six implants. Whatever you wish, you can bite and chew.
- Better Bone Support: You will retain more bone by having six implants since your bone will receive more stimulation. This helps prevent bone loss, keeping your face younger and more youthful. Overall, you will have bone positive retention.
Dr Madina adds: “When the jawbone stays active, your face keeps its shape.”
- Longer Lifespan: When pressure is shared among six implants instead of fewer, each one experiences less strain. This can help the entire system last for decades with proper care.
- Natural Look and Feel: Each All-on-Six bridge is custom-made to suit your face, your gums, and even your smile line. After it is finished, it will be so lifelike that no one will detect that you have had any work done.
Other extra benefits of all-on-six implants include:
- Enhanced oral function
- Improved comfort
- Easy maintenance. You care for it just like real teeth.
- Customized fit.
- Durability
- Preserves facial structure
What the Procedure Looks Like
All-on-six implants follow a straightforward process
- Consultation: Your first step is speaking to a qualified dentist. Most clinics these days offer consultations over the internet. You just show them your teeth and pose your questions. After this, you can come in for the planning.
- Planning: Your dentist will take X-ray and 3D scans of your mouth and jaw. They will assess your bone health and check your health history. They determine if you’re a good fit for the procedure this way and also create a plan for where each implant will go.
- Implant Placement: In this step, your dentist uses local anesthesia to numb your teeth. If there’s a need to extract any teeth, they will also do so. After this, they place and screw in six titanium implants in the positions they marked. This is done with care for the surrounding tissue.
- Temporary Teeth: After the six implants are placed, your dentist may give you a temporary denture. This isn’t fixed to the implants, and it’s not meant for eating or chewing. Its main purpose is to help you maintain your appearance while the implants heal.
These temporary dentures are for aesthetics only. Using them to bite or chew too soon could put pressure on the implants and affect healing. Whether or not you’ll get a removable denture at this stage depends entirely on your dentist’s recommendation and your specific case.
- Healing and Integration: Over the next few months, the implants heal. They also fuse with and grow around your bone. This is called osseointegration. It makes your implants strong and secure. Osseointegration takes about 3-6 months.
- Permanent Teeth: When the implants are done healing, you go in again. This time, the dentist removes the temporary teeth. Then they put in a permanent set.
At DentSpa, we use the Malo Bridge for this final restoration. It’s a durable, custom-made, full-arch prosthetic designed specifically for use with All-on-4 or All-on-6 implants. What’s more? It lasts up to 15 years.
Before and After of All-on-Six Dental Implants
Here’s an overview of before and after pictures from satisfied patients.
Which Is Better: All-on-4 or All-on-6 Dental Implants?
There’s no straight answer to this. All-on-4 dental implants are just like all-on-six. However, instead of 6 titanium posts, the all-on-4 implant uses only 4. The result is less stability compared to all-on-six implants
All-on-4 is often quicker and more affordable. It’s recommended for patients whose bone volume may not support an all-on-six implant. All-on-6 implants, on the other hand, are preferred for support and stability. The additional two posts make them ideal for patients who want maximal support.
Dr. Madina adds, “If your bone can handle it, six is better. It’s sturdier and feels more natural when you bite.”
That said, here’s a quick look at key differences in the two procedures.
Feature | All-on-6 | All-on-4 |
Number of Implants | 6 implants per arch | 4 implants per arch |
Stability | Higher stability and load distribution | Slightly less stability than All-on-6 |
Bone Requirement | Requires more bone density | Can work with less bone, often avoids bone grafts |
Cost | Higher cost due to extra implants and surgery time | Generally more affordable |
Best For | Patients wanting maximum stability and long-term durability | Patients with lower bone density or budget constraints |
Recovery Time | Slightly longer recovery period | Slightly shorter recovery period |
Support | More implants provide stronger, more stable support | Fewer implants, relies on strategic angling for support |
All-on-Six Dental Implant Cost
To be honest, the cost of getting all-on-six implants done will be affected by some factors. These include the country you get your dental implant treatment done in, the clinic you go to, the materials used, your insurance plan, and more.
Some dental clinics, especially the ones in Turkey, offer plans that combine surgery, transport, hotel accommodation, and even aftercare.
Back home, those extras would cost you even more. But in Turkey, they’re all part of the deal. Turkey offers a more affordable option, often for less than 75% of the price.
Below’s a quick comparison of the cost of all-on-six implants in Turkey and other countries.
Am I a Candidate for All-on-Six Implants?
You may be a good candidate for all-on-six implants if you:
- have lost most or all of your teeth in one jaw
- have healthy gums and good overall health
- have enough bone to hold six implants
- want a permanent solution, a natural-looking smile
You might not be a great candidate if you:
- smoke heavily and aren’t ready to quit
- have serious health conditions like uncontrolled diabetes
Dr. Madina explains: “To be sure that you’re a good fit for an all-on-six implant, you should always speak with your dentist. They’ll carry out necessary scans and gauge your health history.”
Recovery and Aftercare Tips
Recovering after getting an all-on-six treatment usually takes about 6 months.
It’s normal to feel sore for the first few days. You can manage this with ice packs and pain relievers.
After this first week, your pain should subside as the tissue around the implants starts to heal. This will continue for the next few months. Your jawbone fuses to the all-on-six implants and grows around them.
Once the healing is done and you’ve gotten your permanent teeth, you can treat them like regular teeth. This means just maintaining good oral health. No special “all-on-six” maintenance is required.
To make recovery easier and faster, you should:
- Rest well
- Eat soft foods for the first week
- Avoid smoking and alcohol
- Drink a lot of water
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Keep your dentist updated about any changes.
What Side Effects Should You Expect After
This varies from patient to patient, but it’s normal to experience any or a combination of these effects temporarily:
- Swelling and tenderness
- Bruising
- Minor bleeding
- Numbness
- Mild pain or discomfort
- Difficulty chewing or speaking
Possible Extreme Complications
While the above are pretty normal, possible (although rare) complications of an all-on-six surgery include:
- Implant failure due to lack of integration
- Infection due to poor oral hygiene or bacteria during healing
- Nerve damage
- Prolonged healing or discomfort
- Peri-implantitis, which damages and prevents bone from growing around the implant
Usually, these complications can be fixed with a revisit to the dentist.
